What a Character! Blogathon on Nov. 9-10-11

"There are no small roles..." and the creative minds behind the upcoming What a Character! Blogathon are readying themselves to prove--once again--that the focus of their admiration could never be called "small actors."

This celebration is being hosted by  Kellee of Outspoken & Freckled (and @IrishJayHawk66), Paula of Paula’s Cinema Club (and @Paula_Guthat) and Aurora, of Once Upon a Screen (and @CitizenScreen).

This event was conceived from the phrase used by our home of the classics, Turner Classic Movies (TCM), and it honors the richly diverse supporting players who have so often proven themselves vital to classic movie storytelling. The delicate balance these accomplished actors performed are often the very best part of a classic movie. Whether they played sounding boards for the leading players, truth-tellers who puncture the stars' pretensions, or helpmates extricating the central characters from many a scrape, their presence is never minor (even when uncredited). They continue to inspire affection, hisses, laughs, tears and the warmth of a smile when we catch sight of certain figures--whether a Alan Hale, Sr., Edna May Oliver, Nat Pendleton, Ann Doran or more. To this day those who cherish or have only recently discovered the enduring joy of classic movies often do so when noting the performing artists who enriched classic film.

If you’re interested in participating you are asked to follow these guidelines:

  • Let one of the hosts know which character actor is your choice.  Although we’re inclined to limit these to those considered “traditional” classic actors – or before 1970 just to choose a point of reference – if you’ve an actor in mind after that time, that’s acceptable as well.
  • Please include your twitter or FB tag, email address and blog name & URL.
  • Publish the post for either November 9, 10 or 11.  Let us know if you have a date preference, otherwise we’ll split publicizing duties equally among the three days.
  • Please include the blogathon graphic on your blog to help us publicize the event.
  • Include the graphic and link to one of the host sites in your WHAT A CHARACTER! post
  • If possible, please send any of the hosts the direct link to your WHAT A CHARACTER! post by the day before your due date.  Otherwise we’ll simply link to your site’s home page.
  • HAVE FUN and spread the word!  There are many great characters worthy of attention.

You can see the current list of actors whom bloggers have chosen to honor this year here.

I'll be posting about about Pert Kelton on Nov. 10th and John Hoyt on Nov. 11th in this blogathon.
