New Year Friday Favorites

Here are my first Friday Favorites of 2020, as I join once again with Susanne of Living to Tell the Story, to remember the best things about the last week!
  • Reading

Since I was off work for most of this week, I took some time to read and relax. I finished one book The House Girl and started another, The Kitchen HouseThe House Girl was a very good, super engaging historical fiction.  It's a good story and I learned a lot about slavery and the Underground Railroad.  I gave it four stars **** out of five.  Now I enjoying The Kitchen House. See the rest of the books I read last year here.
  • Listening
I have mentioned before how much I enjoy listening to podcasts when I am in the car, or doing some activity that doesn't require tons of thought - like folding laundry or cleaning my bathrooms.  While there are several podcasts that I really like and look forward to,  Jody Moore is the one I have been listening to the longest.  It is this podcast that got me started on podcasts over a year ago.  I love Jody Moore's very positive, but realistic take on how to deal with the problems of life.  Her ideas have helped me through some rough moments.  Good listening!
  • Cleaning up
We from this...

...to this...

 ...to this.
I admit that putting all the Christmas decorations away was a bit exhausting, and took longer than I expected, but it is finished now. The only Christmas that remains are the Christmas Cards on the back of our front door, which I will probably leave up another week or so.
  • Lunch with my cousin
Since moving back to Utah,  I have reconnected with two of my cousins from my adopted family.  It has been so fun to get reacquainted with these women, one who is about my age (LeaDawn) and one who is the same age as my birth mother (Carolyn).   I had lunch with Carolyn earlier this week.  She is a delightful woman who is kind and wise and reminds me a lot of my mom and grandma.  She has great family stories to tell and it fun to get together with her.  I hope to do it again soon.
  • Snow
We got some snow on New Year's Day.

I can have an amazingly beautiful view of the mountains from this vantage point in my front yard, but  Wednesday morning I could just see clouds and snow.

In the afternoon, we could see the mountains...

...but they were still shrouded in clouds and snow.   I have heard skiing is great right now, but I am not a skier. I am enjoying the different seasons here in Utah.  I am glad the snow came on a morning when we didn't have to go to work.
  • Lunch with Josh
I took Josh out to lunch on New Year's Day.  He likes Cafe Rio so that is where we went.  One of my goals this year is to try to keep building and maintaining a positive relationship with him, with specific one-on-one time - like going out to lunch.
  • Dinner with Charly
Of course, I have dinner with this handsome guy every night, but we decided to go out for Chinese food to celebrate the New Year.

Charly wanted to try this place not too far from our home.

It was a good choice.  I got my favorite - Beef Broccoli and it was excellent.  Having Chinese Food with Charly to celebrate the New Year is a tradition I love and want to continue for many, many new years to come.
  • New glasses

My new glasses came in less than a week, which is a good thing because I was starting to experience eye strain and headaches with the old ones.  The new ones will take a bit of getting used to, but I can already see an improvement.
  • New Semester
Josh has registered for his classes and paid his tuition yesterday for the new semester which begins on Monday. It has been great to see him be so responsible and so excited about continuing his education in college, especially since he got off to a bit of a rocky start when he first came home from his mission.  LDS Business College is a small, affordable college that has proven to be a good fit for Josh.  It is affiliated with the church we belong to and he really likes the Christian atmosphere of the school.
  • Short Week
Our Christmas break was over yesterday, Thursday,  January 2, so it was back to work for Charly and I,  but I am still tired from staying up and getting up later than usual on a school day, so I am super glad that this school is week is only two days long.  I noticed yesterday that many of the kids were super tired as well, so it will be great to have another couple of days to catch up and try to get back on schedule.

Those are a few of my favorite things for the final days of 2019 and the first days of 2020.  Have a great weekend and I will see you again soon!
