Song Review: Greyson Chance is Attracted to the Sweet "Honeysuckle" on Latest Single

As Greyson Chance preps the release of his sophomore album, he dreams of summer weather and romances on the project's latest single.

"Honeysuckle" serves as the artist's love letter to summer, a dedication to the recklessness he normally enjoys during those months. As many now struggle with the darkness and chilly loneliness that the COVID-19 pandemic has brought upon us, Chance hopes the new single will shine a warming light on listeners.

The story of "Honeysuckle" appears to follow the rise and fall of a suitor who thinks they're untouchable, a bit too confident for their own good. Just as flower petals fall as the seasons turn, so does the level of admiration and attention said suitor experiences. Summer is usually hot and frenzied. Winter unfortunately brings times of longing and emptiness.

Instead of the uptempo dance production that elevated preceding "Dancing Next To Me", the new effort leans heavily on sparse, tinkering beats and distorted vocals to highlight the unfortunate journey of a lover. The imagery of being carefree in white cotton shirts, compared then to a junkie on the streets, introduces us to someone who has not yet figured out what they want from their passionate encounters.

"When you’re wasted in December indoors, you wish he’d wonder, but he never comes around anymore, you push them further," Chance sings on the second chorus.

The track excels, as always, thanks to Chance's songwriting skills. "Honeysuckle" accentuates the confidence and freedom we all feel when the sun is shining bright on our skin. It also isn't afraid to pull back the covers to reveal our inner struggles when we're forced into mundane routines, cold weather, or... quarantine measures.

While the length of the song is questionable and disappointing -- once "Honeysuckle" finally finds its groove, it ends after only two minutes -- Chance is still able to give listeners a peek into his love life, his rollercoaster personality, and a sense of optimism all in record time.

Summer is here. Enjoy it as best you can.
