According to TMZ, "a number of Democratic fundraisers and political operatives in the state" are encouraging Braun to run for governor of California. They believe the current candidates – lieutenant governor and former San Francisco mayor Gavin Newsom and former Los Angeles mayor Antonio Villaraigosa – are "flawed."
ICYMI: Scooter Braun responds to Manchester attack
The report claims Braun caught the eye of party members after fundraising for Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign and giving a heartfelt speech at Ariana Grande's Manchester benefit concert. High-profile celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Kanye West and Tom Hanks attended Braun's 2015 Clinton fundraising event, says Variety, with tickets priced at $2,700 per person.
Before Braun can get wrapped up in an election – voting day for the California gubernatorial race is Nov. 6, 2018 – he'll be participating in a contest of a different sort. He's currently in talks with CBS to develop a singing competition series.
On Wednesday afternoon, Villaraigosa's spokesperson responded to TMZ's report: "Clearly, he knows how to handle a rich kid with a famous hairdo, so if he runs, it'll be fun to watch him [Scooter] take on Gavin Newsom in a debate."
Braun's team did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
